Examination Copy Policy:
College and university faculty may request examination copies of books for consideration as course texts. Payment in full (by check, money order, or credit card) must be made in advance.
Paperback Titles: Exam copies of paperback titles with a price of $29.95 or less are available for no charge (limit: 3 books) to the Continental United States. Paperback titles with a price of $29.96 or higher will be treated as cloth titles (see below)
Multi-Media Materials (DVDs, CDs, CD-ROMs, etc.): These materials will be treated as cloth titles (see below).
Cloth Titles: Cloth titles must be purchased at full price. If the book is adopted as a course text and an order for ten or more copies is placed within 90 days, the instructor's payment will be refunded. If the book is not adopted, it may be returned in saleable condition within 90 days for a refund.
Exam copy requests should be limited to no more than three books per semester. If an instructor receives an examination copy and the book is later adopted as a course text, the exam copy serves as the instructor's desk copy. In general, IU Press furnishes exam copies only to faculty in the U.S. and Canada; elsewhere, instructors should contact the local distributor of IU Press books for information about exam copy availability.
Requests for exam copies should be sent by mail or fax on departmental letterhead, and should include the following information:
- title of book
- instructor's name
- title of course for which the book is being considered, semester, and projected enrollment
To pay with a credit card, please include the name, account number, and expiration date of your card. (We accept Visa, MasterCard, Discover, and American Express.
Desk Copy Policy:
College and university instructors are entitled to one complimentary desk copy of any book adopted for course use if 10 or more copies have been ordered by the college bookstore and the instructor has not previously received a desk or examination copy. We cannot provide "desk copies" for use in departmental or institutional libraries.
Requests for desk copies should be sent by mail or fax, on departmental letterhead or on a standardized university desk copy request form, and should include the following information:
- title of book
- instructor's name
- title of course
- semester and projected course enrollment
- whether book is a required or recommended text
- name of bookstore and date text order was placed
Desk and exam copy orders cannot be placed by phone or e-mail.
