FAQs

What is IU Press?
Founded in 1950, we are recognized internationally as a leading academic publisher specializing in the humanities and social sciences. The Press emphasizes scholarship but also publishes text, trade, and reference titles. We are one of the largest public university presses, as measured by titles and income level.

How many books do you publish?
We produce approximately 140 new books annually, in addition to 29 journals, and maintain a backlist of some 2,000 titles.

What subject areas do you publish?
Our major subject areas include African, African American, Asian, cultural, Jewish and Holocaust, Middle East, Russian and East European, women's and gender studies; anthropology, film, history, bioethics, music, paleontology, philanthropy, philosophy, and religion. We also feature an extensive regional publishing program under our Quarry Books imprint.

How does the Press support itself?
Our program is financed primarily by income from sales, supplemented, to a minor extent, by support from Indiana University and by gifts and grants from a variety of outside sources.

How do I submit a book proposal?
Please see our author resources page for more information.

Are your books and journals available electronically?
Yes. Our electronic publishing initiatives include:

JSTOR's Current Scholarship Program
We have partnered with JSTOR to make current and archival content from our journals available on the JSTOR platform. Effective January 1, 2011, our journals will no longer be accessible from INscribe, our previous publishing platform.

Institutions and individuals with electronic subscriptions to IUP/Journals may access content via JSTOR. Institutional and individual subscriptions are also available for purchase via the JSTOR website. If you are having difficulty accessing subscribed content on JSTOR, please contact support@jstor.org.

What do you charge for shipping?

Shipping information will be handled by our distributor on an order-by-order basis.

How long will it take for my order to arrive?

The items ordered may ship from separate warehouses and not arrive in the same package/shipment. Shipping time will vary depending on the location of the warehouse and by the shipping service requested. Below are estimated shipping times

  • US Shipping Ground Service - allow 7 to 14 business days for delivery
  • US Shipping 2 Day Air - allow 4 to 7 business days for delivery
  • US Shipping Overnight - allow 3 to 5 business days for delivery

How do I return an order?

All returns must be approved in advance. Credit will be issued for items received in clean and resaleable condition and all funds will be credited back to the original bank card used with the original transaction.

Eligible IPS distributed titles may be returned to Ingram’s Chambersburg facility where they will be sorted and credited accordingly. Credit will be issued for IPS products received in “shop worn” or better condition and that were purchased as a returnable product. Books will be fully returnable for 180 days after out-of-print notification. Books and products purchased from IPS may be returned—in the same box—with overstock returns originally purchased from Ingram Book Company (wholesale).
