The inside story as told by Pence’s closest confidants—and his harshest critics.

What does it take to become the second-in-command of one of the most powerful countries in the world? Mike Pence's rise to the vice presidency of the United States wasn't always easy. To some, he is the personification of American conservative values, but to others, his ideals are the epitome of prejudice and bigotry.

In Pence: The Path to Power, journalist Andrea Neal showcases how the vice president arrived at this position of influence. Neal interviews friends, family, staff, former teachers, and politicians on both sides of the aisle to reveal a multifaceted view of the self-described Christian, Conservative, and Republican–in that order–from his beginnings in a large Irish Catholic family in Columbus, Indiana, through the scandals of his first election, to his time beside Donald Trump. This candid look at Mike Pence's life exposes his unexpected path to power and the individuals who influenced him along the way.

Author Bio

Andrea Neal is a journalist, American history teacher, and native Hoosier. A graduate of Brown University, she is author of Road Trip: A Pocket History of Indiana.

“I have known Pence since his early days in Congress. He is a man of great personal character and professional integrity, and his life is guided by his strong faith in God and commitment to his family. This comes through in abundance in Andrea Neal's book.”
 — Cal Thomas, syndicated columnist

Pence: The Path to Power is essential to understanding how Mike Pence's zig-zagging path between politics and conservative media shaped him and his philosophies. Andrea Neal describes the enigma of the 48th vice president as: 'How could a biblically-based Christian so readily align himself with a man prone to flout the most recognized rules of civility?' Her book, rich with anecdotes and vivid examples, provides the context for us to answer that question.”
 — Ryan Alessi, political writer

“Political junkies will learn some new facts and stories about Pence and gain a historical perspective missing for even those who were in the middle of the political action. . . . Neal sticks to the facts, yet in a way that yields insights and perspective.”
 — Indianapolis Star

“The result is a look at Mike Pence’s rise to prominence that is as close as we will get to his view of his climb until he writes his own memoirs.”

“A good overview of the path the politically ambitious Pence took to get to his current position.”
 — USA Today

“Balancing out these two highly divergent portraits, Pence: The Path to Power by Andrea Neal—based on interviews with Pence’s family, friends, staff, and other politicians, both allies and foes—paints a more nuanced picture.”
 — Publishers Weekly
